Arcania specialises in renewable energy systems and 'sustainable design' projects and products.
Sustainable design is the art of producing objects using only renewable resources, and which themselves, in operation, deplete only renewable resources. Such designs are called 'sustainable' because they serve human needs without destroying the resource base on which human civilization is based. Thus, they can be used into the indefinite future.
Sustainable design fits into the broad all-encompassing term, Sustainability. In the terms of the 1987 Brundtland Report, Sustainability is: "Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs."
We at Arcania have extensive experience within the Sustainability sphere because we have been involved in it for over twenty years, from permaculture and The Natural Step through to Agenda 21 and the Kyoto Protocol. Throughout our development, Sustainability has been the defining factor in the direction we have taken.
Sustainability is not just an idea to be banded about, it is an ideal to be lived.
Arcania began offering design services in 1995. Initially we served the local community, providing an internet presence and email-to-fax service to small rural businesses without internet access. We quickly grew to include national organisations, such as Friends of the Earth and the Green party in our client base, and have been at the heart of projects endorsed by leading United Nations forums and religious leaders worldwide.
In this our 10th year, with Arcania firmly established as a sustainable technology infrastructure that is largely autonomous, we feel it is time to restructure and move our design services for printed literature and internet sites to our Ecoworks framework in order to help fund the aims and objectives of our newly formed Springstone Foundation.
